Overview

Railroads brought goods to towns across the county and opened travel opportunities.  Prior to 1871, approximately 45,000 miles of track had been laid in the United States. Between 1871 and 1900, another 170,000 miles would be added to the nation's growing railroad system. That growth was reflected in our county.  Seven rail routes crossed through Starke County. This map from around 1900 shows the first six railroads in the county.  The last tracks would be built in 1902.
